BMI calculator (body mass index)

Get your BMI, which category it falls in, and the healthy weight range for your height.

Input

Used only for the reference-weight figure.

Result

Used by Korean health screenings. The thresholds sit below the WHO ones because metabolic risk appears at a lower BMI in Asian populations.

How to use

  1. Choose your sex. It is used only for the reference-weight figure.
  2. Enter height in centimetres and weight in kilograms; the BMI updates as you type.
  3. Switch between the WHO and Asia-Pacific thresholds to see how the verdict changes.
  4. Use the healthy weight range below the result to set a target.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula?

Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. At 170 cm and 65 kg that is 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 22.5.

Why do obesity thresholds differ between sources?

The WHO puts obesity at a BMI of 30 or more. Research showing higher metabolic risk at the same BMI in Asian populations led the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity to set it at 25, which is what Korean health screenings use. Both tables are offered here.

Is BMI misleading for muscular people?

Yes. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot separate muscle from fat. An athlete with low body fat can read as overweight, while someone with little muscle and high body fat can sit in the normal band. Read it alongside waist circumference or body-fat percentage.

Does it apply to children or during pregnancy?

No. Children and adolescents should be assessed with age-and-sex growth percentiles, and pregnancy uses recommended weight gain based on pre-pregnancy BMI.

Is my height and weight stored?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and no value is transmitted or saved.

About the BMI calculator

Body mass index expresses weight relative to height, giving a quick estimate of body fatness. It is easy to measure and internationally standardised, which is why health checks and insurance screening use it as a first filter.

This calculator shows the number, the band it falls in, and — for your height — the range of weights that would land in the healthy band. That turns a vague target into a concrete interval.

BMI is not a diagnosis on its own. Interpret it together with body composition, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose and lipids, and leave diagnosis and treatment to a clinician.
