Frequently asked questions
I paid 70 for something listed at 100. What is the discount?
30%. Divide the 30 you saved by the original 100. The formula is (original − paid) ÷ original × 100.
Is 30% off plus a further 20% off the same as 50% off?
No — it is 44%. The second coupon applies to the already-reduced price: 100 becomes 70, then 56. Adding percentages always overstates the discount, and the gap grows as the discounts get larger.
Does the order of the coupons matter?
Not for percentage discounts: multiplication does not care about order. It does matter once a fixed-amount coupon is in the mix, so check which sequence a retailer applies.
Can I recover the original price?
Yes: original = paid ÷ (1 − rate). Paying 60 at 40% off means the list price was 100. The exception is 100% off, where any price becomes zero and the original cannot be recovered.
What about sales tax?
The calculator assumes both prices are on the same basis. A tax applied at the same percentage to both prices leaves the discount rate unchanged; mixing a tax-inclusive price with a tax-exclusive one does not.
Can it handle a price increase?
Yes. If the price paid exceeds the original, the rate comes out negative and is labelled an increase — 100 to 120 shows as −20%.
About the Discount calculator
A discount calculator answers the same question from either end: what rate turns one price into another, and what price a rate produces. Shops advertise whichever of the two suits them, which is why both directions are useful.
Stacked coupons are where intuition fails. Two coupons of 30% and 20% come to 44%, not 50%, because the second applies to what the first left. This page shows the naive sum next to the real figure so the gap is visible rather than assumed.
Working backwards is the honest check on a big advertised discount. Given a final price and a claimed rate, the implied list price either matches what the item normally sells for or it does not.
Add a quantity and the page reports price per item. Three for 20% off against five for 30% off cannot be compared on the total alone.
